not long introduction is deserved for this Selmer Super Balanced Action with serial number 49xxx. A mythical instrument in all its original condition, assembled and engraved in the US, with a pristine neck stamped with the same serial number as the body.
All those who know what we are talking about, it is THE vintage saxophone that refers to many miths and urban legends that are constantly heard. For example:
* Roberto Woodwinds always talks about the magic of these instruments when the oxidation takes on a reddish hue as shown in the bell. His argument is based on the bigger amount of copper in the alloy, and there weren't many runs that Selmer used this brass... and how does it influence? well, in a much more colored resonance, "ringing", bell-like...
* Mark Turner could tell you a lot about this serial number 49xxx, where lyricism and projection intermingle in a masterful way in its timbre.
Fully serviced, and with pads in good condition, this SBA feels great under the fingers thanks to its compact, lightweight action that complements its ease and freedom of emission.
The Selmer Super Balanced Action is considered by many to be the design that set the tone for the modern saxophone. Originally called the Super Action model, it is now known as the Super Balanced Action (SBA) to differentiate it from the newer Super Action 80 model that came much later. This was the first Selmer saxophone to feature offset tone holes in the upper and lower stacks. On previous models, the tone holes were all in line along the front of the sax. On the SBA, those in the bottom stack are now offset slightly to the right, making for a much more comfortable feel. Players loved it, and pretty much all modern horns are based on this idea now. Special order options available from Selmer for the first time included high F# and low A (on the bari sax).
