Description

SML "Rev D" Tenor Saxophone. Vintage 1953.

Here is a fine example of a classic French tenor saxophone. This SML was manufactured in 1953, right in the middle of the SML Rev D line. These represent the finest saxes that came out of the  Strasser, Marigaux & Lemaire factory. These saxophones were direct competitors to the Henri Selmer Paris models of the era and were manufactured in the same district of Paris.

These horns are commonly called the “Rev. D“, though SML did not call them that.  The “Revision D”  is the horn whose design won the Gold Medal at the International Music Expo in the Hague in 1953 (same year this horn was made!) and were therefter stamped “Gold Medal”.  So the “Rev. D” is very close to the Gold Medal, and is the model that actually won the Gold Medal.

The SML instruments are finely crafted with excellent intonation in Paris, France. They are famous for high-end oboes and English horns. The saxophones are amazing and hand crafted in an era when computer aided manufacturing was only in a science fiction novel. Each instrument is a one-of-a-kind piece of history, and you get one that really sings, the performance is a delight.

This saxophone has original lacquer. The extensive engraving is sharp and in great shape. NEW OVERHAUL by ours included!

The tone is wonderfully dark and the sound is powerful, sax neck is original equipment and is in solid condition.
