Description

Alto Buescher True Tone 171xxx

This saxophone is a piece of American history. It is an instrument for musicians who are looking for that deep “vintage” sound and are not afraid of a little personality.

Feature Description and Rating

Tone/Sound The strong point. It is incredibly warm, sweet, and lyrical. The sound is round, focused, and has a “fat” sonority that was lost in later designs. Ideal for vintage jazz (like Johnny Hodges' style) or classic R&B.

Mechanics/Ergonomics The biggest challenge. The ergonomics are old-fashioned. The left-hand keys (especially the pinky cluster) are awkward by modern standards and take some getting used to. The palm keys are often low. Many musicians add risers to improve comfort.

Intonation Surprisingly good. For a 1920s design, many restorers and experienced musicians note that intonation is impeccable in the middle and high registers, especially with the right mouthpiece (large chamber). The high treble (overblow register) is considered easy to reach and tune.

Construction A tank. These are sturdy instruments, built to last. The metal is strong, and the original silver or lacquer finish (if preserved) is usually very good quality for its age.

Requirement Needs love. Requires a complete overhaul by a technician specializing in vintage instruments to play to its full potential. The pads and corks have already given their all.
