Description

American Cut reeds represent the next generation of Légère saxophone reeds. From the first note, the reed sounds with total ease while giving the musicians just the right amount of tonal advantage. They are easy to play, colourful and full of personality.

The distinctive profile of the American Cut reeds is what gives the players a vibrant overtone register with a full and clear low register.

Profile reinvented:

The American Cut is like no other reed you have ever touched. By taking material from the outside of the reed and pushing it towards the heart, the reed maintains its rigidity while allowing the edges to vibrate as freely as possible.

The distinctive profile of American Cut is what gives players a vibrant high and a full, clear low register.

Made for jazz:

After years of research, more than ten design iterations and hundreds of test reeds issued, American Cut is the most developed reed Légère has ever produced. This extensive testing process was carried out with one purpose; to create a jazz reed that offers total freedom of interpretation while providing the reliability for which Légère reeds have become known.

About Legere

As a scientific researcher and author of several patents, Guy Légère has spent as long as he can remember trying to figure out what makes things react. Guy graduated from McGill University in 1995 with a PhD. in Chemistry.

Guy took up the clarinet at the age of 27, studying under Abe Galper and playing in the Brampton Symphony Orchestra. His reeds created issues from the start. Something needed to change when he found himself spending more time on finding good reeds rather than on his music! As a researcher he was exposed to many types of materials and manufacturing techniques and as a chemist, he had the knowledge needed on how to manipulate these compounds. After gathering basic knowledge of how a reed works, Guy formulated an idea of what an ideal material might be. He reached out to Mark Kortschot (actual Legere President) for help, and a business was born.

Légère Reeds Ltd. was founded by Dr. Guy Légère and Dr. Mark Kortschot in 1998. Guy, a scientist and amateur clarinetist, thought that there had to be a product that played as well as moist cane without any of the inevitable issues that resulted from using traditional reeds. It was his drive and passion to change these issues that lead to the creation of the first Légère Reed prototype.

After many trials, failed attempts and re-engineering, the first sixty prototypes were made on a home-built CNC machine. They were taken to ClarinetFest in 1998 to test with experienced players. To Mark and Guy’s amazement, all the reeds sold out in half a day, and the rest… is history!

Today, Légère Reeds produces state of the art synthetic reeds for many single and double reed instruments. Distributed worldwide, the reeds are produced in an ultra-modern manufacturing and distribution facility in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.
